SPE Japan Section was pleased to invite Dr. Subhash Ayirala for the 1st distinguished lecturer program for 2021-2022 on December 1, 2021 (Zoom Meeting).

Date: 16:00-17:30 JST, December 1, 2021
Topic: SmartWater Flooding Mechanisms and Water Chemistry Guidelines for Carbonates
Lecturer: Subhash Ayirala, Saudi Aramco

Subhash Ayirala is the Champion of SmartWater flooding at Saudi Aramco's Exploration and Petroleum Engineering Center—Advanced Research Center, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He is SPE distinguished member and currently serves as co-executive editor of SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering.

In this lecturer program, he focused on the pore scale mechanisms for oil recovery in SmartWater flooding, which are not completely understood yet. He presented the multiscale experiments (nano-micro-macroscopic-core scales) to explore the interactions of salinity and aqueous ions at oil/brine and carbonate-oil/brine interfaces. The systematic analyses showed that SmartWater effect in carbonates is a combination of two effects, one being related to the release of oil attached on rock surfaces (wettability change) and the other being related to improved oil-phase connectivity and better oil mobilization (enhanced coalescence of oil ganglia).

He also discussed the results of several case studies and highlighted two important takeaway points: (1) Not every low salinity water can become a SmartWater for carbonates, and (2) SmartWater is nothing but a tailored water chemistry containing certain salinity and selective composition of three key ions including sulfates, magnesium and calcium.

SPE Japan is glad to have him as one of the distinguished lecturer this year. We appreciate his informative talks and we are looking forward to seeing the Japan Section members in the next distinguished lecture program.

Thank you.
